United Kingdom in ITEA

After a long period of absence, the United Kingdom has been actively supporting British participation in ITEA projects again since ITEA Call 2022. At the submission deadline of that Call, 12 UK organisations were engaged in a Full Project Proposal (FPP). Just one year later, this number surged to 26 British organisations contributing to a total of 12 submitted FPPs, illustrating a remarkable increase in interest and commitment. This progress provides a solid foundation for extending collaboration in the future.

OPTimised Industrial IoT and Distributed Control Platform for Manufacturing and Material Handling

The ITEA project OPTIMUM enables machines of different kinds and from different manufacturers to communicate with each other and their operators, improving the worker’s and equipment’s safety. In recognition of this exceptional achievement, OPTIMUM received the Special ITEA Award of Excellence today in all three nomination categories: Innovation, Standardisation and Market Impact.

ParMA

Parallel Programming for Multi-core Architectures

The ITEA 2 Board is impressed by the innovation and fast exploitation in PARMA which developed advanced technologies to exploit multicore architectures for high-performance computing (HPC). This led to substantial improvements in applications such as virtual prototyping to reduce costs and accelerate design. Exploitation includes: the bullx HPC platform, partly optimised in ParMA, named as the world’s best supercomputer by HPCWire;– the UNITE development tool package includes a full set of interoperable tools for advanced debugging and analysis; and RECOM simulation software already used for an automatic 3D combustion-optimisation simulator.

SmartTouch

Browsing Through Smart Objects Around You.

The ITEA 2 Board appreciated the usage orientation of SmartTouch: touching and interacting. By promoting near-field communications (NFC) technology in many different applications, such as ticketing, the home and e-health, the consortium succeeded in rapid exploitation of the research results. Examples include Gemalto, which provided the world’s first commercial NFC SIM based mobile contactless system already deployed on a large scale in Taiwan, a Nokia NFC mobile phone, public-transport ticketing in Frankfurt and the Touchatag ALU spin-off. The consortium has also made an impressive dissemination effort (350 publications).
